Workshop: Digitizing Parliamentary Libraries in 21th Century
Mid of April Treventus held a workshop with the Kenyan Parliament Library.
The workshop was held on three days with visits in the Austrian National Library and the Austrian Parliament.

The meeting and information exchange with the Austrian National Library as well as Austrian Parliament Library turned out to deliver many interesting and valuable insights to their working procedures and (new) approaches to IT services.
The team of the Kenyan Parliament Library could evaluate, compare and confirm own approaches but also derive a lot of ideas from the meetings and workshops. Although only 3 days of meetings and workshops many different topics were addressed and discussed.
Newspaper scanning
One of the topics was the newspaper scanning project, the Kenya Parliament Library is realizing at the moment. The planning phase of the project started already in 2020. Finally, in spring 2022 different hard- and software was ordered and the scanning started in summer 2022.
Already during the planning phase typical challenges of newspaper projects were discussed. Now it was time to get in touch with other institutions to share experiences and solutions.
A very typical character of similar digitization projects is, that they have similar challenges worldwide.
In all projects about for scanning bound newspapers for example the first question is “what to do with the information that is cut off in the fold”. Whether to unravel or cut the binding or not. For good reasons in most projects the bound newspapers are scanned as they are.
At the other end of all project considerations is always “what should happen to the data”. Only archiving or also re-using the information.
Digital archive and library
In the newspaper project the Kenyan Parliament Library has already during the planning phase decided to give the data a second life by putting it into a digital platform. During the workshop possible changes were discussed and the upload will start soon.
